18 October 2022 Banele Coffee DONATE TO MAKING A NORTHERN WHITE RHINO

The northern white rhino (Ceratotherium simum cottoni) is a subspecies of white rhino, which used to range over parts of Uganda, Chad, Sudan, the Central African Republic, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Years of widespread poaching and civil war in their home range have devastated northern white rhino populations, and they are now considered to be extinct in the wild. Only two remain, both on Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya.

In August 2019, a team of international scientists harvested eggs from Fatu and Najin, the last two northern white rhinos in the world, in a groundbreaking procedure. They were able to harvest ten eggs, of which seven were viable, and two were then successfully fertilised into embryos using stored sperm from two northern white rhino bulls (Suni and Saut). This extraordinary development is the result of the collaboration between Dvur Králové Zoo, Ol Pejeta, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), IZW Berlin and Avantea Cremonac.

December 2019 another seven eggs were harvested, and were able to make another embryo, again using frozen semen. This miracle embryo, and the two from the first procedure, are now being stored in liquid nitrogen and will soon be transferred to surrogate southern white rhinos.

A donation to support the IVF process will ensure that one day in the future, northern white rhinos will once again roam freely in their natural habitat. Not only that, but the extraordinary developments in IVF may help a myriad of other species, themselves teetering on the edge of extinction, receive the help they need to flourish on earth once again.
